Background on the Campaign

Bullying is a common-day experience for many school children. The fear of being bullied may keep as many as 160,000 students out of U.S. schools on any given day. Bullying is a problem that is widespread yet also retractable when communities and schools put in place effective interventions and prevention programs. Recognizing this, in March of 2004, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration launched the nation's first and largest initiative to raise public awareness about bullying among 9- through 13-year-olds and foster effective prevention efforts across the country.

Two years of extensive research went into the development of marketing strategies, messages and materials for the Take a Stand. Lend a Hand. Stop Bullying Now! Campaign and numerous organizations and individuals assisted with the development of the Campaign, including representatives from government, nonprofit, and corporate sectors. Every step of the way, a Youth Expert Panel of tweens and teens has provided their unique insight and feedback. Bullying Prevention Resource Kit

In addition to serving as a fun and interactive place for young people to learn about how to deal with bullying situations, the campaign website is a virtual clearinghouse of helpful tips, strategies and resources for adults seeking to take a more active role in bullying prevention. An on-line Bullying Prevention Resource Kit acts as the campaign's central vehicle for disseminating information on bullying and bullying prevention initiatives. Visitors to the web site can quickly access the Resource Kit for a comprehensive inventory of existing programs and resources (books, videos, CD-Roms) on bullying. The materials you submit here will be considered for inclusion in a searchable catalogue for use by tweens, teens, parents, professionals and other concerned adults.
